NASA's Unmanned Global Hawk Aircraft Conducts Ground Breaking Science MissionsNASA's Unmanned Global Hawk Aircraft Conducts Ground Breaking Science Missions

SAN DIEGO, June 9, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- NASA's unmanned Global Hawk aircraft, developed by Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC), completed four science flights over the Pacific Ocean during the month of April. The flights were part of the Global Hawk Pacific (GloPac) mission, a joint project between NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with Northrop Grumman support.

The GloPac mission flights revolutionized the collection of data in the stratosphere. Fitted with 11 science instruments, Global Hawk acquired and transmitted data that has never before been accessible through either manned flights or satellites. Flights reached up to 65,000 feet where information was collected from the air as well as the water and polar ice below. Data from the science instruments were downloaded in real-time to NASA Dryden Flight Research Center where scientists were able to analyze the data, and if necessary, ask the Global Hawk pilot to adjust the flight path to optimize data collection.
Flights during the GloPac project ranged from north of the Arctic Circle, over polar ice, down to Hawaii near the equator. NASA Global Hawk completed 82.5 flight hours, with one particular flight lasting 28.6 hours, eight hours of which was spent north of Alaska over the polar ice. Additionally, this was the first time a Global Hawk unmanned air vehicle has flown as far as 85 degrees north latitude.
The flights were designed to address several science objectives, including validation and scientific collaboration with NASA earth observation satellite (EOS) missions, principally the Aura satellite, also built by Northrop Grumman. The GloPac payloads collected atmospheric data in the same location at the same time as Aura and other EOS missions to compare and combine results.

"Global Hawk is a revolutionary aircraft for science because of its enormous range and endurance," said Paul Newman, co-mission scientist for GloPac and an atmospheric scientist from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "No other science platform provides the range and time to sample rapidly evolving atmospheric phenomena. This mission is our first opportunity to demonstrate the unique capabilities of this plane, while gathering atmospheric data in a region that is poorly sampled."

A Space Act Agreement between NASA Dryden Flight Research Center and Northrop Grumman established a partnership to re-fit and maintain two Global Hawk aircraft transferred from the U.S. Air Force. As part of the Northrop Grumman/NASA partnership, the company contributed to the GloPac missions by developing the GloPac mission plans; confirming aircraft performance through extensive analysis; providing pilots and training for NASA/NOAA pilots; sharing maintenance and operations support; and developing and building a new ground control station and software for aircraft operations. Additionally, under a contract from NASA, Northrop Grumman performed aircraft modification engineering and analysis for installation of the science payloads, which was funded by the science sponsors for each of the 11 sensors.
"We have partnered with NASA to provide this new capability for the atmospheric science community," said Carl Johnson, Northrop Grumman vice president of advanced concepts – air and land. "The Global Hawk system has been serving the United States Air Force and Navy and is now serving mankind with critical data from the NASA and NOAA science experiments. Global Hawk is truly global in its reach."

Later this year, NASA Global Hawk will examine hurricanes and their formation process. This experiment will explore the possibility of improving hurricane forecasts. The Global Hawk aircraft is proving to be the premier platform for use in high-altitude, long-duration Earth science missions.

EADS presenta un innovador helicóptero hibrido diesel-eléctrico

Publicado originalmente en Blog.SandglassPatrol.com
  • Sistema motor híbrido diesel-eléctrico
  • Hasta un 50% menos de emisiones
  • Menos ruido

Take Off Landing), helicópteros de reducidas dimensiones y enormes capacidades, expondrá

EADS to Showcase Innovative Hybrid Helicopter Concept at ILA 2010

  • Diesel-Electric Hybrid Propulsion System
  • Up to 50 Percent Less Emissions
  • Lower Noise Levels and Improved Safety Margins

EADS a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services, is presenting an innovative hybrid helicopter concept at ILA Berlin Airshow 2010.

EADS Innovation Works, the corporate research and technology network of EADS, develops diesel-electric hybrid concepts as part of the Group’s research to make helicopters more environmentally friendly. Highly efficient electrical motors driving the rotors, combined with diesel engines, reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 50 percent. The EADS Innovation Works Eco2Avia research platform will open up new possibilities for cleaner, safer and more quiet helicopter and aviation operations”, says Dr. Jean Botti, Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of EADS. Take-offs and landings are possible on electrical power alone, resulting in lower noise levels and improved flight safety.

The main components of this patented hybrid system are multiple diesel-electric motor-generator units, a pair of high-performance batteries and a power electronics unit controlling the energy flows for best efficiency. The OPOC (Opposed Piston, Opposed Cylinder) diesel engines offer a fuel economy improvement of up to 30 percent compared to today’s helicopter turbine engines. The OPOC engine’s power output shafts are fitted with advanced, weight-optimised generators delivering electrical current to the power electronics unit. This unit manages the distribution of the electricity to the electrical motors driving the main rotor and the tail rotor, to and from the batteries as well as to the other user systems on the helicopter.

The four independent energy sources of this kind of propulsion system ensure very high levels of flight safety and efficiency. Several different kinds of combustion engines could be integrated into such a hybrid system.

The hybrid system architecture allows the main rotor and its electrical drive to be tilted forward during cruise flight. This enables the helicopter’s fuselage to remain at its optimum alignment with the airstream, minimizing aerodynamic drag and thereby reducing the power demand and the fuel consumption. Since the tail rotor has no mechanical linkage to the main rotor and its power source, it can be turned off at higher speeds. During these flight phases, stability and control as well as balancing of the rotor torque are provided by the aerodynamic properties of the helicopter’s tail fin and rudder.

The model of a concept helicopter, showcased at ILA, exemplifies EADS Innovation Works’ research towards eco-efficient propulsion system solutions for future helicopters.

This is one of the projects that are grouped under the name of eCO2avia by EADS Innovation Works. The patented EADS Innovation Works hybrid propulsion technology combined with the improved helicopter aerodynamics will lead to impressively improved characteristics in terms of fuel consumption and emissions. The concept is one of many examples of the research efforts undertaken by the EADS Group towards achieving the aviation industry’s climate protection goals.

EADS flies world’s first plane powered with biofuel based on algae at ILA

  • Use of biofuel from algae leads to reduced fuel consumption
  • Emission of nitrogen and sulfur oxides reduced drastically
  • Opens up opportunities to achieve carbon neutral flights
  • No competition with food supply

At the ILA 2010 in Berlin, EADS is showcasing the world’s first flights of an aircraft powered by pure biofuel made from algae. A Diamond Aircraft DA42 New Generation powered by two Austro Engine AE300 engines takes part in the daily flight demonstrations

Due to the higher energy content of the algae biofuel, the fuel consumption of the Diamond DA42 New Generation is 1.5 litres per hour lower when compared to conventional JET-A1 fuel – while maintaining equal performance. Tests also proved that only relatively minor modifications and adjustments had to be made to the aircraft’s engines to qualify the biofuel from algae for the demonstration flights.

Algae are considered to be promising potential feedstock for biofuels, as certain species of algae contain high amounts of oil. This oil can be extracted, processed and refined for various uses. Grown for many years on a commercial basis for the development of products such as food supplements and cosmetics, microalgae have now emerged as one of the leading sources for alternative fuels. Microalgae reproduce rapidly and create at least 30 times more organic substance (biomass) per cultivation area than, for example, rapeseed. Their cultivation does not compete with food production. Algae can be grown on poor quality land using non potable or saltwater.

“Our pure bio fuel flight from algae is a world first and an exciting milestone in our research at EADS.” says Dr. Jean Botti, Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of EADS. “This opens up the feasibility of carbon-neutral flights and we will continue to focus our research in this exciting area. Third generation biofuels are more than just a replacement for fossil petroleum - they push the possibilities of future propulsion.”

The exhaust gas quality measurements indicate that biofuel from algae contains eight times less hydrocarbons than kerosene derived from crude oil. In addition, nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide emissions will also be reduced (up to 40 percent less nitrogen oxides and ca. 10 ppm sulfur oxides vs. 600 ppm of conventional Jet-A1-fuel) due to the very low nitrogen and sulfur content of the biofuel compared to fossil fuel.

Algae can be produced in sufficiently large quantities without competing with food production for fertile land or potable water. EADS research shows that all necessary technologies to develop the production of biofuel from algae are known, but industrial size and economy require further development. EADS is working with partners towards a pilot project to develop the necessary industrial infrastructure. The project is led by EADS Innovation Works, the corporate research and technology network of EADS and supported by the Bavarian Ministry of Economics, Transportation and Technology through the Government of Upper Bavaria with funding from the Bavarian aerospace research and technology programme (Project Bay68 “Biofuel from Algae”). The project is carried out in partnership with IGV GmbH of Potsdam, Diamond Aircraft and Austro Engines of Austria. The algae oil for flight testing and demonstration flights was delivered by Biocombustibles del Chubut S.A. in Argentina and refined into biofuel by VTS Verfahrenstechnik Schwedt, Germany.

Currently it is significantly more expensive to produce oil from algae in comparison to sourcing crude oil. If algae-based fuel is to be able to compete with kerosene, research and development work must aim to establish a cost effective mass production of algae biofuels using industrial quantities of carbon dioxide.

“As a systems architect of aircraft and helicopters, we consider that it is our responsibility to foster research on biofuels, even if we are not directly involved in the energy business”, states EADS CTO Jean Botti. “Therefore, EADS pursues research for suitable alternatives to fossil fuels and works together with leading research institutes as well as state governments and stakeholder companies from around the world towards achieving the climate protection goals of the aviation industry.” The goals for the year 2020 set by the Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE) include a carbon dioxide reduction by 50% and a nitrogen oxides reduction by 80%.

NASA Seeks Research Proposals For Green Aircraft Concepts

WASHINGTON -- NASA is soliciting proposals for studies designed to identify advanced vehicle concepts and enabling technologies for commercial airliners to fly more economically, quieter and cleaner by 2025.

This research will support the Integrated Systems Research Program in NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate in Washington. The solicitation is the first of several expected under the directorate's "Research Opportunities in Aeronautics" announcement for 2010, released on Wednesday.

The total potential value of the research contracts is $36.6 million, and proposals are due by July 15.

NASA will select up to four teams for 12-month studies beginning in fiscal year 2011. The studies will define preferred concepts for advanced vehicles that can operate within the Next Generation Air Transportation System, or NextGen. The system is a U.S. government air traffic modernization effort that includes NASA.

The concepts must incorporate technologies enabling large, twin-aisle passenger aircraft to achieve ambitious environmental goals. Goals include 50 percent less fuel consumption and nitrogen oxide emissions compared with today's airliners and an approximately 80 percent reduction in the nuisance noise footprint around airports.

After nine months work on preferred systems' concepts, each team will be eligible to submit proposals for a subscale flight demonstrator design. NASA will select one or two concepts for 17 months of preliminary design work and risk reduction testing for completion by mid-2013.

This research is supported by the Environmentally Responsible Aviation Project within the Integrated Systems Research Program. It also will benefit an emerging new project related to the use of remotely-piloted aircraft in the national air space.

Because the subscale flight demonstrator will be capable of operating in autonomous and remotely-piloted modes, it will test environmental technology, other suites and techniques. Test areas may include separation assurance and collision avoidance; command, control and communications; remote pilot and vehicle interfaces; environmental hazards detection and avoidance that could enable routine operation of future unpiloted air vehicles. NASA anticipates conducting test flights with the demonstrator in 2015.

Specific evaluation criteria, deadlines and points of contact for this research topic and other project areas are available in the announcement at:

Envelope Expansion Continues as Sikorsky X2 TechnologyTM Demonstrator Flies Faster than the Average Helicopter

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida - Sikorsky Aircraft Corp.’s X2 TechnologyTM demonstrator achieved a speed of 181 knots in a test flight today at the Sikorsky Development Flight Center. Sikorsky is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).

The X2 Technology demonstrator combines an integrated suite of technologies intended to advance the state-of-the-art, counter-rotating coaxial rotor helicopter. It is designed to demonstrate that a helicopter can cruise comfortably at 250 knots while retaining such desirable attributes as excellent low-speed handling, efficient hovering, and a seamless and simple transition to high speed.

"The X2 Technology demonstrator today exceeded average helicopter speeds of a conventional helicopter, generally 160-170 knots,” said Jim Kagdis, Program Manager, Sikorsky Advanced Programs. “The demonstrator is proving out the technologies very well, from the active vibration control system to the fly-by-wire controls. There are no show stoppers here so far, and now the program turns a corner, as this completes phase three of four. We are flying forward to the 250-knot cruise speed.”

The X2 Technology program began in 2005 when Sikorsky first committed resources and full funding for the program’s development.

“For potential customers, this milestone is exciting news and a solid signal that these technologies are true and executable, performing the way we expected they would,” said Mark Miller, Sikorsky Vice President of Research & Engineering. “As the X2 Technology demonstrator prepares to write a new page in aviation history later this year, we will continue the conversation with our customers and look forward to mapping out future applications that will meet customer needs.”

Among the innovative technologies the X2 Technology demonstrator employs are:

  • Fly-by-wire flight controls
  • Counter-rotating rigid rotor blades
  • Hub drag reduction
  • Active vibration control
  • Integrated auxiliary propulsion system

Airbus delivers the 30th A380

The 30th A380 to be delivered was handed over today to Emirates Airline, one of the launch customers of the Airbus double-decker aircraft. This is the tenth A380 Emirates has received out of its total firm order for 58 aircraft.

This aircraft will be on display at the ILA Berlin Air Show which is taking place from June 8th to 13th. Lufthansa will also bring their recently delivered, first A380 to the show and from June 11th an Airbus flight test A380 will be on static and flying display.

Airbus has already delivered seven A380s so far in 2010, three to Emirates Airline, two to Air France, one to Lufthansa and one to Qantas. Airbus is on track to deliver a total of at least 20 A380s in 2010.

Today five major airlines, Singapore Airlines, Emirates Airline, Qantas, Air France and Lufthansa, operate 30 A380s on 20 routes linking 18 major international destinations. Together they have carried nearly five and a half million passengers on 15,000 revenue flights and have clocked up almost 140,000 revenue flight hours. These A380 flights have saved 640,000t of CO2 emissions by replacing journeys that would otherwise have been made with less fuel-efficient large aircraft. The A380 has the lowest fuel burn of any wide body aircraft, needing less than three litres of fuel per passenger per 100km.

. The A380 is also a proven profit generator. Delivering an impressive double-digit percentage reduction in cash operating costs, it allows airlines to either increase the number of seats offered at little or no extra cost or keep the same capacity at a much lower total cost. This is one of the reasons why seven of the 17 A380 customers have already placed repeat orders and over half the world’s top international carriers have ordered it.

Airbus has received 202 firm orders for the A380 from 17 customers.

Boeing eager to nail down timeframe for cleansheet narrowbody

http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2010/06/04/342826/boeing-eager-to-nail-down-timeframe-for-cleansheet-narrowbody.html

Boeing CEO Jim McNerney says he still prefers to replace the 737 with a cleansheet design unless airline demand fails to mature before 2025.

...

With scaled down 787 systems and a future engine offering, Boeing aims to offer between 15-20% direct operating cost savings over today's narrowbody aircraft.

Chief competitor Airbus is planning an end of year decision on re-engining the A320 family for a mid-decade entry into service. Additionally, a 2013 entry into service by market newcomer Bombardier with the 110-149-seat CSeries is weighing heavily on Boeing's decisions to re-engine or replace the 737.

Electric Mobility in the air and … new ELEKTRA ONE

Press Release (Wednesday, June 3, 2010)

Electric Aircraft ELEKTRA ONE from PC-Aero

Today the Expo for sustainable mobility „the electric avenue" in Friedrichshafen/Germany starts. After the world premiere at the Expo Aero 2010 PC-Aero now presents again it's Electric Aircraft, the ELEKTRA ONE.

Our Vision:
Using the existing technology it is possible to fly with a one-, two- or four-seat Electric Aircraft, for more than three hours, more than 400 km range, without noise, with zero CO2-emission, for lower operation costs than using a classic aircraft.

E-Plane Family
PC-Aero designed a family of Electric Aircrafts, based on an aerodynamic and structure similarity - starting from the one seater ELEKTRA ONE, going to a two seat aircraft ELEKTRA TWO and ending with the four seater ELEKTRA FOUR. ELEKTRA ONE may fly with less than 5 kW/hour. Using solar cells installed on the wing can fly with less than 4 kW/hour. ELEKTRA ONE SOLAR, a derivative version of ELEKTRA ONE may fly only using the energy from the sun.

"The E-Plane family will be a bridge for the future electric transportation in the third dimension, the air", says Calin Gologan, president PC-Aero. The first flight of ELEKTRA ONE will take place in late summer 2010.

Green Village Airfield
Calin Gologan (PC-Aero) will not only present a new Electric Aircraft, our ELEKTRA ONE. He will show more a future concept of electric mobility in the third dimension, the air: flying for more than 3 hours with CO2-emission zero in combination with a Solar Hangar (we name it Green Village Airfield).

ELEKTRA ONE will need only about 20 m2 photovoltaic cells (costs about 6.000 €) on the hangar roof in order to fly more than 300 hours/year (south Germany conditions).

ELEKTRA TWO will need about 40 m2 solar cells. In less than 8 years the costs of the solar cells will be returned. In this way a real CO2 zero emission flight will be realized.

We name this concept Green Village Airfield, the future of e-mobility concept in leisure aviation. PC-Aero is working close with the GERMAN AIRCLUB (DAEC) in order to realize this concept next year.

Calin Gologan-Network for the Green Village Airfield-project
Our project Green Village Airfield/Solar Hangar are actually in the planning phase. Engineers, scientists and pilots just connected to the Calin Gologan-network in order to bring this project to reality.

NASA-/CAFE-Green Flight Challenge 2011 (1,5 Mio. $)
The Team PC-Aero will compete with ELEKTRA ONE for the NASA Green Flight Challenge (http://cafefoundation.org) in summer 2011 California/USA. This will be the highest price in the history of general aviation (1.5 Mio. $) and will be sponsored by NASA. The goal: fly with less than 1 gallon/100 miles with more than 100 MPH, for a 200 miles range, for a two seat aircraft. A one seat aircraft must fly with 0.5 gallons/ 100 miles. For electric power 1 gallon will be converted in 33.7 kWh. PC-Aero built up a strong international team of worldwide best engineers and test pilots in order to win this price. The NASA-/CAFE-Green Flight Challenge event will be followed by the whole media world. As a team with the best chance to win we offer attractive sponsorship possibilities.

Synergies between Electric Aircrafts and Electric Cars
There are three very important synergies between Electric Aircrafts and Electric Cars:
• electric power unit
• use of the best aerodynamics
• saving weight
􀂾 Aircraft designers have the best experience in saving weight (ex.: carbon
composite structures) and aerodynamic optimization.
􀂾 E-Car designers have the best experience in the e-power package.
Working together would be the best benefit for both. That's why we are looking for
joint ventures with E-car manufacturers.

Sponsorship
Sponsorship levels are now available for business sponsors, airplane manufacturers, technology and industry partners and research and university partners. Sponsors will receive media visibility, be granted permission for use of the PC-Aero logo, have opportunities for corporate logo placement, be listed on the www.pc-aero.de website and participate in numerous planned events.

Darpa Sets Goals For Morphing-Rotor Demo

http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/generic/story_generic.jsp?channel=awst&id=news/awst/2010/06/07/AW_06_07_2010_p24-231440.xml

Boeing, Sikorsky and the Bell Boeing tiltrotor team have received 16-month Phase 1 contracts to assess a wide range of adaptive rotor technologies and develop designs for both a clean-sheet “objective” rotor system and a demonstrator rotor that can fly on an existing aircraft.

“Adaptation of all blade attributes are on the table: twist, airfoil, chord, sjpegness, rpm., etc.,” says Daniel Newman, Darpa’s MAR program manager. “There are many technologies available. It’s not just any one, it’s about developing multiple adaptive technologies that complement each other.”

...

The goal of MAR is a rotor that can change its configuration before a mission and in flight, between mission segments and with every revolution. “Adaptation for rotorcraft is a huge opportunity because the blades see a wide range of flight conditions,” says Newman. “They can adapt between mission segments and also around the rotor azimuth.”

Eurocopter unveils NH90 MedEvac Variant at ILA Berlin Air Show – Retrofit kit solution also available for Combat SAR missions

Eurocopter will be presenting an NH90 in the Forward Air MedEvac (Medical Evacuation) configuration for the first time at ILA 2010 in Berlin. Designed to meet the future needs of the German Armed Forces, this configuration of the world’s most advanced multirole military helicopter is the company’s response to an initiative by the German Federal Ministry of Defence to increase availability of protected NH90 transport capability for wounded personnel. The requirement amounts to twelve helicopters.

The main goal of this retrofit measure is to enable NH90 operators to carry out missions over any terrain, day or night, under all weather and visual flight conditions, irrespective of the threat scenario. Eurocopter ensures that the proposed solution fully meets the military's operational requirements and that the project can be completed within 20 months.
To reduce the approval procedure to a minimum, part of the development work originally planned for the Final Operational Configuration (FOC) NH90 has been moved forward, including the MG-3 parts kit and anti-ballistic protection. Already-existing NH90 systems such as electronic countermeasures, helmet-mounted display for low-altitude night flight, and secure voice communications will be adapted to the new mission requirements. The helicopter will be equipped with two intensive care bays for treating wounded personnel, and seats for the medical team. The Medical Service of the German Army was consulted and its experience taken into account in the design and layout of the working areas.
The systems selected for this configuration ensure rapid helicopter availability, optimized compatibility with the current NH90 program, and full operational capability for the transport of wounded personnel.

Kit solution also possible for Combat SAR missionsEurocopter offers a similar mission package as a retrofit for the TTH (Tactical Transport Helicopter) variant of the NH90 for Combat Search-And-Rescue (CSAR) and personnel recovery missions, i.e. saving the wounded from combat zones. Options for the CSAR variant include up to three machine guns (one on each side door and one on the tail ramp), anti-ballistic protection, a rappel system, a double rescue hoist, an emergency flotation system, sand filters, an obstacle warning system and ECM self-protection. The NH90 has a standard range of approximately 200 nautical miles, which is sufficient to reach 94 percent of all mission targets. The range can be increased to up to 300 nautical miles by adding internal and/or external auxiliary tanks. The in-flight refueling capability of the helicopter means it can also be deployed far beyond these distances.

The retrofit capabilities of the NH90 for CSAR missions offer significant advantages to operators such as the German Armed Forces. The CSAR variant is interoperable with the other TTH variants in service in Germany and other European countries, and can benefit from the logistics solutions already employed by the Army and Air Force. The NH90’s stealth features, combined with its all-weather capability and heavy-duty transmission with 30-minute dry-run capability, assure its survivability under the most extreme conditions.

The traditional, vehicle-centric approach assigns a single person to a single vehicle and restricts their access to information from across their team, which can create stovepipes and uneven workload. Lockheed Martin's unique software system -- called Supervision of Unmanned vehicles Mission Management by Interactive Teams or SUMMIT, for short -- introduces a mission-centric approach that allows watchstanders to fluidly share information and tasks, equally distribute workload, complete mission analysis faster, and improve situational awareness.

http://www.fayerwayer.com/2010/06/seis-voluntarios-simulan-desde-hoy-un-viaje-de-520-dias-a-marte/#more-93981
