De carácter internacional, ha sido coordinado por la UPM bajo el liderazgo del profesor emérito de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Aeronáuticos Juan Ramón Sanmartín Losada.
Una amarra espacial desnuda es una cinta de material conductor sin aislante de varios kilómetros de largo, pocos centímetros de ancho y decenas de micras de espesor. “Mientras el satélite está activo, la amarra se encuentra enrollada de forma compacta en un carrete y, tras finalizar la misión, se despliega según la vertical local. Funciona de manera totalmente pasiva gracias a su movimiento relativo al plasma magnetizado de la ionosfera”, explica el profesor Sanmartín, quien introdujo este concepto en 1992, en la nota de prensa de la UPM.
Los electrones del plasma son capturados por la amarra y eyectados por un pequeño dispositivo llamado contactor de plasma, que se enciende una vez la amarra se encuentra desplegada. El resultado es una fuerza de frenado de Lorentz del campo geomagnético sobre la corriente en la amarra.
Se encuentra dentro de las tecnologías de deorbitado denominadas disipativas, las cuales no necesitan combustible ni sistema de potencia; de hecho la amarra transforma la energía orbital en eléctrica que podría ser utilizada por el satélite si fuera necesario. “Otra ventaja que presenta el sistema es que apagando momentáneamente el contactor se interrumpe la maniobra de deorbitado, útil si hubiera que evitar una colisión”, subraya.
BETs ha alcanzado un nivel tecnológico que permitirá realizar una demostración en órbita. The Bare Electrodynamic Tethers Project (BETs) nació en 2010 financiado por la Unión Europea en su Programa Marco FP7/Space.

“Estos componentes funcionales nanoestructurados se han fabricado libres de fallos, lo que no había sido desarrollado con anterioridad”, señala en la nota de prensa de la universidad. En su investigación se ha centrado en la forja isoterma, que utiliza temperaturas superiores a las de la forja convencional. Entre las ventajas que se han observado, indica en sus conclusiones, destacan "el mejor control de la temperatura durante el proceso, las mejores propiedades mecánicas de las piezas forjadas y el menor gasto energético, ya que la preformas han de ser calentadas a menor temperatura”.
Daniel Salcedo es ingeniero industrial, con especialidad en intensificación mecánica, por la Universidad Pública de Navarra y doctor en Ingeniería de Materiales y Fabricación por dicha universidad. En la actualidad trabaja como profesor ayudante en el Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica, Energética y de Materiales.
