¡ya está aquí el 9º episodio de Remove Before flight! (tu podcast aeronáutico ;-D)

Pasado el verano, y el episodio especial verano, volvemos a los capítulos de una hora y a los contenidos habituales. En ésta ocasión, traemos más noticias y más análisis de la actualidad. Pero la cosa no acaba ahí, tenemos también una edición de burradas aeronáuticas en la que hablamos sobre cierto "troll" irlandés, así como un monográfico en el que nuestro redactor, Jose Manuel Gil, entrevista a Francisco Larios, ingeniero técnico aeronáutico que ha participado entre otros proyectos, en el diseño del 787, sobre las diferencias entre la filosofía de diseño aeronáutico ruso y occidental. Es decir, dos cracks del diseño aeronáutico hablando sobre diseño aeronáutico. No os lo perdáis, ¡es muy muy interesante!

Experimental boundary-layer-control bed testUAV 1st flight



The jets on the DEMON aircraft work in a different way. The plane works by manipulating the air that flows immediately next to its skin, rather than changing its shape.

Jets of air close to the trailing edge of the wing change whether the air moves away from or towards the wing. Sensors along the wing constantly monitor the airflow and can adjust the direction of the jets of air.

The DEMON has an eight-foot wingspan and weighs just 200lbs. DEMON can fly parts of its mission by itself but is not fully autonomous as it is still just an experimental vehicle.

  • Airline Virtual Classes Could Be The Future

    “The future of the aircraft cabin is set to go through significant changes as customers are able to share their preferences with airlines, and airlines will be expected to meet their individual needs,” the report says.

    “For example, some passengers in today’s economy [class] would have access to a wide variety of [paid] electronic services, such as Wi-Fi, gaming and entertainment. Others might prefer quiet or distraction-free zones. The integration of these different subclasses with other specialized paying services (such as improved meal services or preferred seating arrangements) could result in further effective fragmentation,” the report continues.

    Flight testing of Eurocopter’s X3 high-speed hybrid helicopter demonstrator marks a new milestone in the company’s innovation roadmap




    Eurocopter has begun test flights of the X3 demonstrator for its innovative High-speed, long-range Hybrid Helicopter (H3) concept, which combines excellent vertical takeoff and landing capabilities with fast cruise speeds of more than 220 kts.

    The X3 demonstrator is equipped with two turboshaft engines that power a five-blade main rotor system and two propellers installed on short-span fixed wings. This creates an advanced transportation system offering the speed of a turboprop-powered aircraft and the full hover flight capabilities of a helicopter. The concept is tailored to applications where operational costs, flight duration and mission success depend directly on the maximum cruising speed.A wide range of utilizations are envisaged for the H3 configuration, including long-distance search and rescue (SAR) missions, coast guard duties, border patrol missions, passenger transport and inter-city shuttle services. It also may be well-suited for military missions in special forces operations, troop transport, combat SAR and medical evacuation – benefitting from the hybrid aircraft’s combination of higher cruise speeds with excellent vertical takeoff/landing performance.

    “Innovation is at the core of Eurocopter’s strategy to continue its leadership in the global helicopter sector, and the X3 demonstrator represents a key element of our innovation roadmap,” said Lutz Bertling, Eurocopter’s President & CEO. “The teams at Eurocopter took this hybrid helicopter from concept to first flight in less than three years, which demonstrates their skills, capabilities and dedication to defining the future of rotary-wing aircraft.”

    The X3 demonstrator’s first flight occurred September 6 in southern France at the Istres Center of “DGA Flight Testing”, which is operated by the French DGA government agency and ensures a secure and controlled environment. Initial testing will continue through December with reduced power, progressively opening the flight envelope to speeds of approximately 180 kts. After a three-month upgrade, X3 flights will resume in March 2011 with the goal of reaching sustained cruise speeds in excess of 220 kts.

    Though it may be some time before the A350 XWB is ready to fly, a simulator for the new Airbus is already in development. CAE announced Thursday that it has signed a contract with Airbus to design and manufacture two CAE 7000 Series full-flight simulators (FFSs) for the Airbus A350 XWB, representing the world's first FFSs for the new long-range aircraft. In addition, CAE will develop six CAE Simfinity A350 XWB Airbus Procedures Trainers.

    CAE announces C$70 million in contracts for world's first two Airbus A350 XWB full-flight simulators, Airbus simulator upgrades, and Boeing 777 FFS for North American customer

    Montreal, September 23, 2010 – (NYSE: CAE; TSX: CAE) – CAE today announced that it has signed a contract with Airbus to design and manufacture two CAE 7000 Series full-flight simulators (FFSs) for the Airbus A350 XWB, representing the world’s first FFSs for the new long-range aircraft. In addition, CAE will develop six CAE SimfinityTM A350 XWB Airbus Procedures Trainers. CAE also announced that it has signed contracts with Airbus to perform a range of upgrades on Airbus-owned FFSs, and that it has received a contract from a North American customer to provide a Boeing 777 FFS. The contracts are valued at approximately C$70 million and bring the total FFS sales that CAE has announced to date in fiscal year 2011 to nine.

    CAE has designed, developed and delivered the word’s first full-flight simulators for more than 40 new aircraft representing 16 different original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

    About Embraer’s Multinational KC-390 Tactical Air Transporter

    The global competition in the 20-ton air transport segment continues to intensify, with Embraer’s launch of its KC-390 program.

    It will develop a jet powered transport that will compete with Lockheed Martin’s C-130J,the larger Airbus A400M, Russia’s AN-12 and its Chinese copy YUN-8/9. Smaller aircraft like the EADS-CASA C-295M and Alenia C-27J could also become indirect competition.

    Embraer seeks now to extend its efforts and markets by crafting a jet-powered medium transport with cargo capacity of about 25 tons, that can be refueled in the air, and can provide refueling services to other aircraft by adding dedicated pods.

    Proponen un satélite que captaría la energía del Sol y cubriría las necesidades energéticas de nuestro planeta.

    El concepto para un satélite llamado Dyson-Harrop comienza con un bucle de alambre de metal largo y puntiagudo enfocado hacia el sol. Este cable es el encargado de generar un campo magnético cilíndrico que captura los electrones que suponen la mitad del viento solar. Estos electrones son canalizados hacia un receptor esférico de metal para producir corriente que alimenta el campo magnético del alambre, consiguiendo así que el sistema auto-sostenible.

    La corriente que no es necesaria para alimentar el campo magnético alimenta un láser infrarrojo que apunta a las antenas parabólicas en la Tierra diseñadas para capturar energía que apuntan a la Tierra. El aire es transparente a los rayos infrarrojos y la atmósfera terrestre no se absorbe la energía del haz antes de llegar al suelo.

    BinterCanarias galardonada por la ERA como mejor Aerolínea del Año

    La compañía aérea española BinterCanarias ha sido galardonada con el prestigioso premio Airline of the Year por la Asociación de Aerolíneas Regionales Europeas (ERA, en sus siglas en inglés), según ha anunciado esta institución durante la Asamblea General que celebra en Barcelona, que integra a las 74 principales empresas de este tipo del Viejo Continente, además de aeropuertos, fabricantes de aviones, motores y equipos y proveedores de servicios.

    El jurado independiente ha valorado especialmente su expansión en tiempos de crisis, la calidad de sus servicios, el cuidado del medio ambiente, su modernidad y estructura.

    El galardón fue entregado al presidente de BinterCanarias, Pedro Agustín del Castillo, y a uno de sus consejeros  delegados, Alfredo Morales. Pedro Agustín del Castillo ha manifestado: "Es emocionante y gratificante conseguir este galardón que reconoce el trabajo de todos los profesionales que componen BinterCanarias en beneficio de nuestros pasajeros, especialmente en un entorno económico tan difícil para el mundo y, especialmente, para Europa y España. Es un estímulo para seguir trabajando mejor  y poder conseguir todavía un mayor grado de satisfacción para nuestros clientes". Se trata de la cuarta vez en su historia que la aerolínea obtiene el máximo galardón de la European Regions Airline Association".

    BinterCanarias celebró el año pasado su 20 aniversario. Es una aerolínea privada, cuya totalidad del capital está aportado por inversores de las Islas Canarias. Cuenta con una moderna flota de 19 aviones ATR 72 de fabricación francoitaliana y es la única compañía aérea que opera en los ocho aeropuertos canarios, además de rutas internacionales al Norte de África y a Madeira. La plantilla de BinterCanarias consta de  1.000 profesionales, que se distribuyen entre las diferentes  compañías  (NAYSA, BinterTechnic, Binterswift, Atlántica Handling, BinterVende, etc.).

    La compañía aérea alemana Lufthansa anunció hoy que el primer fin de semana de octubre cubrirá la ruta entre Fráncfort y Palma de Mallorca con su Airbus 380, el mayor avión comercial del mercado, por un repunte de la demanda.

    La aeronave, con capacidad máxima de 526 asientos, hará sendos viajes de mañana el 2 y el 3 del próximo mes entre la capital económica alemana y el aeropuerto internacional de Son Sant Joan, coincidiendo con el Día de la Unidad Alemana, festivo en Alemania.

    Según el informe, una flota de 179 aviones cisterna fabricados por Boeing (a partir de su modelo 767) sería entre un 20% y un 25% más barata que otra compuesta por aparatos de EADS (a partir del A-330 de Airbus), con unos ahorros que oscilarían entre los 11.000 y los 36.000 millones de dólares (entre 8.250 y 27.010 millones de euros)

    Advocacy of an air-launched, missile defense system is being proposed by two veterans of the Pentagon’s “Star Wars” era and a 1990s program to mate unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and long-range air-to-air weapons.

    Len Caveny, a former director of science and technology, and Dale Tietz, a retired U.S. Air Force officer who focused on unmanned aircraft, were part of the Pentagon’s Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO). Now they are offering a new concept—backed up with several decades of research—to kill theater ballistic missiles (TBMs) soon after launch when they are slow, bright targets.

    Aernnova cierra su primer contrato con el grupo italiano AgustaWestland

    A $47 million contract now in competition will challenge defence companies to prove that even unmanned air vehicles can be trusted to strike targets close to friendly troops.

    The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has issued a request for proposals for the persistent close air support (PCAS) project, which could lead to a live-fire demonstration in four years.

    DARPA Aims to Revolutionize Defense Manufacturing

    Approach may compress systems delivery times by at least a factor of five

    Agile and flexible design and manufacturing approaches are needed to meet the demands of rapidly changing threats to national security, declining defense budgets and the increasing complexity of systems. Current approaches to the development of defense systems and vehicles have proven inadequate for the timely delivery of much needed capability for the warfighter. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) launched a portfolio of programs aimed at dramatically compressing development timelines for complex defense systems. DARPA’s Adaptive Vehicle Make (AVM) portfolio will fundamentally alter the way systems are designed, built and verified, significantly improving the capacity to handle complexity—which has been rapidly outpacing existing 1960s-vintage approaches to managing it.

    According to Paul Eremenko, DARPA program manager, “DARPA’s goal is to replicate the success of the integrated circuit industry in coping with rapidly growing product complexity by moving to higher levels of abstraction in design, introducing design automation and model-based verification and decoupling the design and build phases of the development process.”

    The AVM portfolio is composed of four synergistic efforts: META, Instant Foundry Adaptive through Bits (iFAB), Fast Adaptive Next-Generation Ground Combat Vehicle (FANG) and Manufacturing Experimentation and Outreach (MENTOR), which will culminate in the development of a next generation infantry fighting vehicle. “The aggregate aim is to compress development timelines by at least 5X, shift the product value chain toward high-value-added design activities drastically democratize the innovation process and build the next generation cadre of manufacturing innovators—starting at the high school level,” said Eremenko.

    Earlier this year, DARPA launched the first of the AVM efforts—META—a program to develop metrics, a representation metalanguage, design tools, and verification techniques to enable the synthesis of vehicle designs that are correct-by-construction. “META will create a toolset that enables the development of complex military vehicles and avoids the design-build-test-redesign loop that tends to lead to cost and schedule growth as we chase unanticipated interactions within the system,” said Eremenko.

    iFAB complements META’s “fab-less” design capability with a “foundry-style” manufacturing approach. “The ultimate vision,” explained Eremenko, “is for a bitstream-programmable manufacturing facility that can be rapidly configured to produce a new design or design variation with nearly zero learning curve,” adding: “We call this large-scale manufacturing in quantities of one.” An iFAB-style facility is the defense industry’s analog to modern integrated circuit manufacturing plants, which are automated, adaptable and capable of producing a broad spectrum of products.

    The culmination of AVM is the FANG program which will leverage the META and iFAB capabilities to produce an infantry fighting vehicle. But FANG has yet another objective in mind. “We are looking to expand the number of contributors in the design process by orders of magnitude—we call this ‘democratizing innovation’,” said Eremenko. To that end, DARPA will develop a collaborative infrastructure for crowd-sourcing vehicle designs, called vehicleforge.mil. DARPA expects that the site will employ the META metalanguage to represent designs and will include version control and “branching” features similar to those found in open-source software forge sites—all in an effort to enable thousands across the globe to contribute to vehicle designs. “Naturally, we are also investigating novel mechanisms for credentialing users and for ensuring the integrity of the final design,” Eremenko noted. After vehicleforge.mil goes operational in 2011-12,
    DARPA envisions a series of Adaptive Make Challenges—prize-based competitions of increasing complexity with winning designs manufactured in iFAB—the output of which may ultimately be evaluated against Army prototypes.

    As AVM engages non-traditional participants in the making of defense vehicles, DARPA hopes to generate a renewed interest in the manufacturing field and foster the next generation cadre of innovators. “DARPA will deploy a variety of 3D printers to high schools across the country,” said Eremenko, “our goal is a thousand schools within three years.” Under the MENTOR effort, students will engage in a distributed design and manufacturing experiment using conventional social media to collaborate across schools to develop and build vehicles such as mobile robots, go carts, etc.

    Eremenko is under no illusion that the leap from integrated circuits to an infantry fighting vehicle is an easy one. “The diversity of components and interactions among them is much richer and much more dynamic, and the environment context in which vehicles operate is also significantly more complex—there is no doubt that this is a DARPA-hard problem, but the pay-off for success would be immense,” he said.

    A pair of companies has gotten together to develop an environmentally-friendly system for deicing commercial aircraft. ThermoEnergy Corporation, a maker of wastewater recovery technology and systems, announced a strategic alliance Tuesday with Contego Systems, which provides EPA approved aircraft deicing services to more than 30 airline companies located at major airport hubs around the U.S.

    Brazilian defence minister Nelson Jobim on 19 September met with Gen H H Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE armed forces.
    Jobim says a possible agreement on military co-operation in negotiation between the countries could include Abu Dhabi's participation in the KC-390 programme. Such a deal also would involve UAE interest in the Embraer EMB-314 Super Tucano, he says.

    Back in the Air: X-48B Blended Wing Body Resumes Flight Tests at NASA Dryden

    After undergoing a major overhaul and upgrades, the Boeing / NASA X-48B Blended Wing Body research aircraft resumed flight tests with a checkout flight Sept. 21 from NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.

    The subscale, manta ray-shaped, remotely piloted airplane, also called a hybrid wing body, is a tool of NASA's new Environmentally Responsible Aviation, or ERA, project. ERA aims to develop the technology needed to create quieter, cleaner, and more fuel-efficient airplanes for the future.

    After completion of its first phase of flight testing, the airplane was disassembled for a complete inspection and refurbishment. This new series of flight tests will focus on additional parameter identification investigations following installation and checkout of a new flight computer. The parameter identification work will evaluate the new computer’s control of the aircraft’s flight control surfaces and the airplane's performance.


    In addition to NASA and Boeing, the X-48B team includes Cranfield Aerospace Ltd. in the United Kingdom, and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory in Dayton, Ohio.

    The team completed the 80th and last flight of the project's first phase on March 19, 2010, almost three years after the X-48B's first flight on July 20, 2007.

    Ukraine hopes to set up joint aircraft venture with Russia in October

    Ukraine hopes that a joint venture with Russia to build Antonov aircraft will be set up in Russia as soon as October, the country's Minister of Industrial Policy said on Wednesday.

    The two countries discussed the structure of the venture last week, and Russia "fully agreed" with the Ukrainian proposals, Dmytro Kolyesnikov said.

    Sasol takes to the skies with the world’s first fully synthetic jet fuel

    Lanseria, Johannesburg – Sasol, the world’s leading producer of synthetic fuels from coal and natural gas, today flew the world’s first passenger aircraft exclusively using the company’s own-developed and internationally approved fully synthetic jet fuel.

    The fuel, produced by Sasol’s proprietary Coal to Liquids (CTL) process, is the world’s only fully synthetic jet fuel to have received international approval as a commercial aviation turbine fuel.

    Sanctioned by the global aviation fuel specification authorities the jet fuel is the first fully synthetic fuel to be approved for use in commercial airliners. This marks a significant development in the adoption of clean burning alternate fuels for the aviation industry. The engine-out emissions of Sasol’s synthetic jet fuel, are lower than those from jet fuel derived from crude oil, due to its limited sulphur content.


    The historic flights, from Lanseria Airport in Gauteng to Cape Town, kicked-off Sasol’s 60th birthday celebrations, by staging a fly-past at the opening of the Africa Aerospace and Defense (AAD) 2010 exhibition at Cape Town’s Ysterplaat Air Force Base.

    Speaking from the air force base, where he landed on one of the inaugural flights, Sasol Chief executive, Pat Davies, said the event was a fitting manner to celebrate the company’s diamond anniversary.

    "The development and approval of this fuel is a testament to Sasol’s 60 years of technical innovation and is an important milestone in the company’s history. The approval by the international aviation fuel authorities, of this product, recognises the need to develop aviation fuel from feedstocks other than crude-oil, in order to meet the world’s growing needs", Davies said.

    "Sasol’s advances in synthetic fuel technology have brought us even closer to integrating viable alternate transportation fuel into the energy mix", he said. In 1998, Sasol became the first company in the world to gain approval for the commercial use of a 50% synthetic jet fuel component, which was blended with petroleum kerosene. To date, most of the aircraft leaving O.R Tambo International Airport have flown using Sasol’s semi-synthetic jet fuel.

    Spurred on by the world’s growing need for alternative fuels, Sasol continued with years of extensive test work and research that culminated in the production of the 100% synthetic jet fuel.

    In 2008, international aviation fuel authorities, including the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence (UK MoD), governing the Defence Standard DEFSTAN 91-91, approved Sasol’s wholly synthetic jet fuel as Jet A-1 fuel, for commercial use in all types of turbine aircraft.

    Managing director of Sasol Technology, Willem Louw, said the approval process was stringent.

    The fuel is fully fungible and aligned with the current aviation infrastructure through its compatibility with the existing engine requirements and can be used with conventional crude oil-derived jet fuelling systems.

    Production Operations Now Under Way at Kennedy Space Center

    CAPE CANAVERAL, FL , September 21st, 2010 -- Preparations for Orion’s first mission in 2013 are well under way as a Lockheed Martin-led crew begins lean assembly pathfinding operations for the spacecraft. The crew is conducting simulated manufacturing and assembly operations with a full-scale Orion mockup to verify the tools, processes and spacecraft integration procedures work as expected.

    As the nation’s next generation spacecraft for human spaceflight, the Orion crew exploration vehicle is designed to support missions to the International Space Station and far beyond into deep space. The Orion spacecraft will be fully assembled and integrated on site in the Operations & Checkout (O&C) Facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida, a capability that provides significant time and cost savings.

    “The unique benefit of this complete on-site operation is that we will build the spacecraft and then move it directly onto the launch vehicle at KSC, which saves the government transportation costs associated with tests and checkout prior to launch,” said Lockheed Martin Orion Deputy Program Manager for production operations Richard Harris. “This capability also facilitates the KSC workforce transition efforts by providing new job opportunities for those employees completing their shuttle program assignments.”

    Dubbed the “the spacecraft factory of the future”, the O&C, underwent a two-year renovation effort led by Lockheed Martin with support from Space Florida and NASA. The collaborative effort created a state-of-the-art complex designed with the flexibility to support NASA’s next generation spacecraft fleet.

    Technical innovations incorporated into the O&C include 90,000 square feet of air-bearing floor space, paperless work stations, a portable clean room system, and specialized lifting/lowering and support tools that were designed by United Space Alliance (USA). Specially designed air-bearing pallets will enable a small crew to effortlessly maneuver spacecraft hardware across the factory floor. The building renovation also incorporated modern energy efficient HVAC and electrical systems which will further enhance cost savings for the life cycle of the facility.

    With the help of an advanced crane that can position the spacecraft within millimeters of its target, the crew module, heat shield and service module will be integrated in tooling stations located on the O&C’s factory floor. These tooling stations are portable and will be moved to various Orion facilities around the country to provide low-cost and affordable vehicle processing on the Orion project.

    The industry team supporting O&C tooling station operations include Lockheed Martin, USA and EMF, Inc. a small business based in Merritt Island, Fla., that built the tooling station and support pallets.

    According to EMF Vice President Jeff Flick, the Orion program has been a “bright spot” in the space industry. “As a small business owner that supports NASA and the Department of Defense, I believe it is critical for our country to retain the unique skill mix of expertise that supports key national programs such as human space flight and defense initiatives.”

    Lockheed Martin is the prime contractor to NASA for the Orion Project and leads the industry team that includes major subcontractors as well as a network of minor subcontractors and small businesses working at 88 facilities in 28 states.     Russia is planning to sell Syria the P-800 Yakhont anti-ship cruise missile, which Israeli officials believe will be transferred to Hezbollah armed forces and used to threaten Tel Aviv’s navy warships.

    Russia previously sold sophisticated, supersonic Kornet (9M133) AT-14 anti-tank missiles to Syria that were then supplied to Hezbollah.

    The weapons were used to destroy and damage a number of Merkava 3 main battle tanks and blunt the Israeli armored attack into Southern Lebanon in 2006.

    XCOR Completes Lynx Supersonic Wind Tunnel Tests at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center

    September 20, 2010, Mojave, CA and Huntsville, AL: XCOR Aerospace, Inc. announced today they have completed the primary supersonic wind tunnel testing of the Lynx suborbital spacecraft. The tests were performed at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) using a precision scale model and demonstrated the integrity of the Lynx aerodynamic shape and provided data to make final refinements to the vehicle. These new data provide confidence that the Lynx aerodynamic shape will have stable and controllable flight throughout the range of Mach numbers and angles of attack needed for the Lynx mission.

    The recent tests add to subsonic wind tunnel testing data obtained by XCOR late last year at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Dayton. As part of a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), XCOR, NASA and the Air Force will all benefit from the data. The tests are a joint effort between XCOR and the AFRL’s Air Vehicles Directorate.

    Lynx is a two-seat, single-stage winged suborbital vehicle that lifts off from a runway powered by non-toxic, reusable rocket engines. The vehicle can carry safely to the edge of space and back a pilot, one spaceflight participant, and engineering and scientific payloads. The Lynx can be flown up to four times a day with minimal touch labor between flights.

    “We continue to make excellent progress on the Lynx aerodynamic shape,” said XCOR CEO Jeff Greason. “The tests at MSFC gave us live information about the aerodynamic profile of the Lynx in transonic and supersonic flows, which occur during ascent and re-entry. We greatly appreciate the warm welcome and support we received at Marshall.”

    The trisonic wind tunnel at MSFC, which also tested the Jupiter C, Saturn family, and Space Shuttle, evaluates the integrity and stability of rockets and launch vehicles with subsonic, transonic, and supersonic wind flows.

    Eurocopter registra un incremento del 35 por ciento en el Sur de África

    Eurocopter, el líder mundial de los fabricantes de helicópteros en los sectores civil,  mantenimiento de la ley, respuesta a emergencias, militar y utilitario, ha registrado un incremento del 35 por ciento en sus operaciones del Sur de África, generado por las  inversiones en capacidades de mantenimiento del orden y respuesta a emergencias cívicas.

    La filial regional del Grupo, Eurocopter Southern Africa Ltd, presta apoyo en el Sur de África  a las bases y flotas de clientes que se encuentran en continua expansión.

    "Para el año 2010, Eurocopter Southern Africa espera pedidos por una cuantía aproximada  a 460 millones de ZAR (50,4 millones de euros) y una facturación de alrededor de 380 millones de ZAR (41,6 millones de euros). Esta subida del 35 por ciento sobre la cartera de  pedidos de 2009 refleja la tendencia actual del mercado, que ha experimentado un aumento en los pedidos y las entregas en el sector servicios públicos", explica el CEO de Eurocopter  Southern Africa Ltd, Fabrice Cagnat.

    A pesar de la recesión que afectó a la industria aeroespacial y al sector de helicópteros,  Eurocopter ha mantenido su posición como fabricante líder, con un 52 por ciento de cuota en el mercado civil y de servicios públicos.

    Eurocopter pronostica la recuperación del mercado del Sur de África, conforme a la mejora  de la economía mundial y regional.     En la actualidad, Eurocopter apoya a una flota que opera cerca de 240 helicópteros que vuelan en el Sur de África, en su mayor parte al servicio de fuerzas policiales de la región, organizaciones de rescate médico de emergencia, operaciones VIP y corporativas, así como  en misiones utilitarias. Se emplean, por ejemplo, en misiones geosísmicas, de censo de caza e inspección de líneas de alta tensión. Además, un cierto número de helicópteros vuelan también en el mercado turístico y chárter.

    La empresa cuenta asimismo con una Academia de Formaciónestablecida recientemente en Lanseria, cerca de Johannesburgo, para continuar el desarrollo de su negocio. El centro imparte cursos de conversión (type rating) y entrenamiento técnico a pilotos y mecánicos de helicóptero de clientes de toda la región. Para satisfacer la creciente demanda de instrucción, Eurocopter Southern Africa dará empleo a un instructor adicional a partir demecánicos.

    Eurocopter Southern Africa, que continua ofreciendo apoyo técnico a los clientes de la región, envió el año pasado técnicos a más de 80 misiones. "Las superiores prestaciones de nuestros helicópteros y su fácil mantenimiento hacen de ellos la primera opción para duras misiones, que llevan a cabo con frecuencia lejos de su base.     • Cinco aviones volaron hasta Málaga para realizar seis pasadas en formación de flecha.

    22 de septiembre de 2010. El pasado domingo 5 de septiembre Málaga celebraba su Festival Aéreo, al que Tecnam no faltó. Dedalus Aircraft Distribution, distribuidor oficial de Tecnam, junto a Aero 2000, empresa dedicada a la formación de pilotos en el aeródromo de la Juliana, Sevilla, además de otros tres clientes de la marca desplazaron cinco aviones para participar en la segunda edición del festival.

     Los modelos elegidos, dos Tecnam P2006T y tres P2002 Sierra, volaron hasta el aeródromo de La Axarquía, base de operaciones de los aviones civiles participantes en el Festival. 

    Alrededor de las 11 de la mañana los 5 aviones pusieron rumbo a las playas de la Malagueta y Caleta de la ciudad de Málaga donde realizaron 6 pasadas en formación "flecha".

    Illegal subsidies would have to be factored into the US Air Force selection process for the KC-X tanker contract if Congress passes legislation proposed today by a Washington-based lawmaker.

    Senator Patty Murray, a Democrat, introduced the proposal as an amendment to the Senate version of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2011.

    If passed, the bill would require the USAF to "consider any unfair competitive advantage" in the KC-X acquisition process.

    Jean Botti, Director Técnico (Chief Technical Officer – CTO) de EADS se ha asociado con la “Ecole Centrale de Pekin” (ECPk), un colegio de ingeniería franco-chino proyectado según el modelo de la escuela francesa “Ecole Centrale”. El acuerdo se formalizó el martes cuando el CTO y los Directores de la ECPk, Jean Dorey y Zhang XIONG, firmaron el “Charte des Membres Fondateurs” en la Facultad de Aeronáutica y Astronáutica de la Universidad de Pekín (BUAA). Zhiming ZHENG, Vicepresidente de BUAA participó también en la ceremonia.

    EADS es ya un socio reconocido de la “Ecole Centrale de Paris” y está implicado en los proyectos de investigación y educación de la red de la “Ecole Centrale”. La nueva asociación con la ECPk tiene dos objetivos: Primero, reunir talentos y especialistas que cubran las necesidades de la empresa en China y, segundo, seguir aumentando la cooperación en la investigación. Asimismo, la asociación permite a EADS implicar a los estudiantes de doctorado chinos en proyectos de investigación y acceder a un nuevo centro tecnológico de investigación conjunto.

    “China representa un mercado estratégicamente importante para EADS, lo que demuestran nuestras actuales operaciones”, afirmó el CTO Jean Botti. “Vale la pena fomentar una mayor cooperación en educación, y la ‘Ecole Centrale de Pekín’ puede apoyarnos para conseguir este propósito”.

    Biofuels Could Be Cleared For Aircraft Use

    Approval of biofuels for use in aircraft, expected by mid-2011, is a critical step. A standard for jet fuels using synthesized hydrocarbons has already been crafted and the first annex, covering synthetic paraffinic kerosene (SPK) produced via the Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) process, was approved last year. But a second annex covering bio-SPKs—also called hydrotreated renewable jet fuel (HRJ)—is eagerly awaited, as these promise to reduce aviation’s greenhouse-gas emissions (see p. 60).

    F-15 engine tested on tri-fuel blend

    Continuing the march toward certifying the entire Air Force fleet on alternative fuels, an F-15 Eagle engine is undergoing performance testing here using a unique blend of three different fuel types.

    The F100 engine is being tested with a combination of JP-8 conventional aviation fuel; a biofuel derived from tallow, which is an animal fat; and a synthetic fuel derived from coal through a process commonly known as Fisher-Tropsch.

    The fuels testing is being conducted to ensure the different fuels, in varying combinations, are suitable for an upcoming series of F-15 flight tests tentatively scheduled for October at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., said Brian Knack, the Aerospace Testing Alliance's program engineer for the test. ATA is the operating contractor at the Arnold Engineering Development Center.

    La Agencia Espacial Europea lanza un concurso para que los estudiantes universitarios europeos realicen experimentos en condiciones de hipergravedad.

    Si en 2009, la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA) ofrecía a los universitarios la posibilidad de participar en vuelos parabólicos para llevar sus proyectos a la microgravedad mediante el programa Fly your Thesis!, ahora, les propone dar un giro de ciento ochenta grados e introducir sus experimentos en una máquina centrífuga para alcanzar condiciones de hipergravedad y así conocer qué ocurre cuando la fuerza de la gravedad aumenta entre 1 y 20 veces. Lo han denominado Spin your Thesis!

    Cada equipo de estudiantes debe proponer y diseñar un experimento científico o tecnológico relacionado con el programa de sus estudios que necesite estar sometido a condiciones de hipergravedad durante horas o días.

    Es ahí donde entra la Centrífuga de Gran Diámetro (LCD) que la Agencia Espacial Europea tiene instalada en el Centro Europeo de Investigación y Tecnología Espacial (ESTEC) de los Países Bajos. Se caracteriza por su versatilidad, ya que las condiciones de los experimentos (aceleraciones entre 1 y 20 veces de la gravedad terrestre) y la duración de los ensayos (experimentos de forma continua de minutos a meses) varían en función de las necesidades inherentes a cada muestra.


    Fases y desarrollo del experimento
    Spin your Thesis! 2011 consta de tres fases. La primera, en la que los equipos interesados en participar deben registrarse en la web de la Oficina de Educación de la ESA (www.esa.int/education) y enviar sus propuestas antes del 10 de diciembre de 2010.

    Un comité de expertos revisará las propuestas y seleccionará cuatro equipos que pasarán a la segunda fase, en la que deberán desarrollar su experimento. Para ello contarán conel asesoramiento técnico de la ESA y expertos en hipergravedad tanto de la Agencia Espacial como de la Asociación Europea para la Investigación en Condiciones de Baja Gracedad (ELGRA). Finalmente, en junio de 2011, los cuatro equipos seleccionados ensayarán el experimento en la LCD, en turnos de una semana de duración cada dos equipos.

    Eclipse Aerospace Announces Release of Enhanced Windshield, Return to 41,000 Feet

    Albuquerque, N.M. – Sept. 20, 2010 - Eclipse Aerospace, Inc. (EAI) today announced the completion of the enhanced windshield application for the dissipation of precipitation static on windshields, and aircraft design changes for operation up to 41,000 feet. EAI committed to bring these upgrades to market for existing Eclipse aircraft owners after EAI acquired the assets of the previous company.

    The new FAA certified windshield application uses a thin carbon strip that is adhered directly to existing Eclipse twin-engine jet windshields. This maintenance-free strip is bonded across the windshield and to the aircraft structure creating a conductive path, which acts as a diverter to dissipate potential precipitation static under certain flight conditions.

    "This new diverter strip replaces the previous chemical-based application, which was hard to apply and difficult to maintain," stated Ken Ross, President of Eclipse Aerospace, Inc. Global Service and Support Division. "We are pleased to finalize this part of the Eclipse Jet service offerings for our customers, who are enthusiastic about the new windshield applications."

    In addition to the improved windshield application, EAI also announces the successful completion of the engineering requirements addressing the existing FAA Airworthiness Directive, restricting flight to 37,000 feet. Eclipse is actively testing these modifications and has completed the final design. Final certification of the aircraft modifications are expected prior to the end of the year. After installation in the aircraft, these modifications will permit the EA500 to return to a service ceiling of 41,000 feet.

"The windshield upgrade and return to 41,000 feet were our most difficult challenges to overcome in our upgrade program.     New Boeing Patent for aerial refuelling: 2 in 1 boom-and-receptacle and probe-and-drogue systems.






    The design mounts the hose and drogue in the extreme tail of the tanker, with a mechanism to attach the hose to the retracted boom when required. The boom then extends, refuels the probe-equipped receiver, then retracts and the hose is detached, allowing the boom to extend to refuel a receptacle-equipped aircraft. Pretty neat.

    De las cuatro grandes empresas que operan en España (Indra, EADS, Navantia y Santa Bárbara Sistemas), todo apunta a que el SEDEF hacía referencia a la tecnológica Indra y al astillero público Navantia, argumentan en el citado diario, puesto que EADS es un consorcio europeo, Santa Bárbara Sistemas es parte del conglomerado empresarial norteamericano General Dynamics.

    Air Force Study Points To Reusable Orbiter

    Newly declassified details of the analysis behind the U.S. Air Force’s decision to opt for a next-generation Reusable Booster System (RBS) reveal a long-term preference for a rocket-based, combined-cycle upper-stage orbiter over the nearer-term expendable solution.

    The RBS plan is in development to replace the Air Force’s existing Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicles (EELV) beyond 2025, and aims to cut launch costs by 50% by combining a reusable first stage with expendable upper stages. The booster would take off vertically and return to a runway landing at the launch site.

    Sukhoi makes noise tests Superjet 100 in Italy

    AR IAC and EASA have cleared Sukhoi Superjet 100 for noise testing certification flights

    On completion of 5 validation flights Sukhoi Superjet 100 has been cleared by AR IAC and EASA for noise program certification flights. At the Levaldigi airport SSJ100 is performing certification flights. Thanks to a telemetry equipment interfacing with on-board Aircraft testing instrumentation, the noise relevant flight parameters, including the aircraft trajectory, will be shown in real-time to flight test specialists sitting in Alenia Aeronautica Control Room located in Torino Caselle airport. Subsequent to the flight, the data will be analyzed in the same Alenia laboratories to provide quick look assessment of aircraft noise characteristics. Since meteo data are essential for Noise tests, both on-ground and in-flight measurements will be taken during tests, the last by using an helicopter equipped by a special probe.

    Prior to the clearance AR IAC and EASA verified the aircraft 95004 configuration, reference trajectories for noise certification, flight test procedures, flight and ground test instrumentation and calibration status. In course of AR IAC-EASA parallel certification, EASA experts have already taken part in high angles of attack program, airstairs ejection and hydraulic system pressurization checks.

    “SSJ100 Noise and HIRF testing, conducted in Italy is not just a program which tests certain aircraft parameters, it’s an essential part of a big effort of AR IAC and EASA in harmonization of the certification standards of Russia, CIS and Europe. And this job is made possible owing to Sukhoi Superjet 100 Program, as SSJ100 is the pioneering aircraft which is designated for the both Russian and world market and has to meet the international certification norms”, - said Igor Vinogradov, SCAC’s SVP on Certification.

    Seven Globemaster IIIs Evaluate Formation Flight Mod

    The  test, designed to evaluate recent modifications made to the airframe's formation flight system, required multiple C-17s to fly in formation to validate FFS performance.

    The FFS enables the pilot to monitor and fly the aircraft in formation with other C-17s at the same altitude and distance in any weather condition.

    The C-17 has a basic mission requirement to fly large-scale formations, both in the clear and through the clouds.

    Sberbank (the Savings Bank of Russia) to credit Sukhoi's Su-35S program


    The Komsomolsk-na-Amure-based Yuri Gagarin Aviation Industrial Concern (KnAAPO), incorporated by the Sukhoi Holding Company, and Sberbank (the Savings Bank of Russia) concluded today a general agreement to build the Su-35S multi-role fighter. The document was signed by Alexander Pekarsh, KnAAPO director general, and Olga Bukhankova, head of the Savings Bank central division in Komsomolsk-na-Amure. The signing of this agreement will provide long-term funding for one of Russia's largest aviation enterprises and ensure the series production of aircraft on time.

    The state's contract under which Sukhoi must supply, by the year 2015, the Defense Ministry with 48 super-maneuverable Su-35S fighters was signed in August, last year, at the MAKS-2009 aerospace show. The series production of aircraft, the first of which was handed over to the Defense Ministry late this year, was organized at Sukhoi's facility in Komsomolsk. The fighter is also intended for the foreign market. Talks are underway for the supply of aircraft to customers in Southeast Asia, Middle East, and South America for re-equipment of their air forces.

    The Su-35 is a thoroughly modernized super-maneuverable multi-role fighter of the 4++ generation. It employs the fifth-generation technologies giving it an edge over the same class fighters.

    The special feature of the aircraft is a new avionics suite based on a digital information control system, integrating onboard instrumentation, a new radar with a phased antenna array capable of detecting a larger number of air targets with their simultaneous tracking and engagement (tracking of 30 and engagement of 8 air targets along with tracking of 4 and engagement of 2 ground targets), and new increased and vectored thrust engines. The Su-35 features a wide array of long-, middle- and short-range weapons. It carries guided munitions for resisting radar systems and fighting ships, general purpose weapons, guided aerial bombs and unguided missiles. The radar signature of the fighter, as compared to that of the fourth-generation, has been reduced by several times thanks to the current-conducting coating of the cockpit, application of radio absorptive surface materials and reduced number of protruding sensors.

    The aircraft's service life is 6,000 flight hours, the life cycle is 30 years, and the designed operating life of the adjustable nozzle engines is 4,000 hours.

    Boeing Wins Darpa Vulture II Program





    The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] on Sept. 14 signed an agreement with the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop and fly the SolarEagle unmanned aircraft for the Vulture II demonstration program. Under the terms of the $89 million contract, SolarEagle will make its first demonstration flight in 2014.

    "SolarEagle is a uniquely configured, large unmanned aircraft designed to eventually remain on station at stratospheric altitudes for at least five years," said Pat O'Neil, Boeing Phantom Works program manager for Vulture II. "That's a daunting task, but Boeing has a highly reliable solar-electric design that will meet the challenge in order to perform persistent communications, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions from altitudes above 60,000 feet."

    Under the Vulture II agreement, Boeing will develop a full-scale flight demonstrator, including maturation of the critical power system and structures technologies. Key suppliers for the program include Versa Power Systems and QinetiQ.

    During testing, the SolarEagle demonstrator will remain in the upper atmosphere for 30 days, harvesting solar energy during the day that will be stored in fuel cells and used to provide power through the night. The aircraft will have highly efficient electric motors and propellers and a high-aspect-ratio, 400-foot wing for increased solar power and aerodynamic performance.

    SolarEagle is one of Phantom Works' rapid prototyping efforts, which also include Phantom Ray, a fighter-sized, unmanned, advanced technology demonstrator scheduled to make its first flight in early 2011, and the hydrogen-powered Phantom Eye demonstrator, a High Altitude Long Endurance aircraft designed to stay aloft for up to four days, also scheduled to make its first flight in 2011.
