Dream Liner Flight Test Program Progressing
Aviation Administration (FAA) granted Boeing (NYSE: BA) expanded type
inspection authorization (TIA) today, clearing the way for its
personnel to fully participate in future test flights and for the
collection of required flight-test data. Initial TIA was granted Feb.
11, which supported the collection of flutter certification data.
The expanded TIA marks the FAA's confirmation that the airplane and
team are ready to collect additional certification data. Boeing
achieved the expansion by demonstrating the readiness of the airplane
throughout a variety of speeds, altitudes and configurations.
"This TIA expansion is another significant step toward delivering
airplanes to our customers. We remain on track to deliver the first
airplane to ANA this year," said Scott Fancher, vice president and
general manager of the 787 program, Commercial Airplanes.
In addition to receiving expanded TIA, Boeing finalized the
aerodynamic configuration of the 787.
"We have completed sufficient testing to decide that no additional
changes to the external lines or shape of the airplane are required,"
said Fancher. "Having an airplane match its expected performance with
so few changes is rare and speaks to the maturity of the design."
The 787 flight-test fleet logged its 500th hour of flying April 16. On
Sunday, ZA003, the flight-test airplane outfitted with interior
elements, landed in Florida, where it will go through extreme weather
testing at McKinley Climatic Laboratory at Eglin Air Force Base.

Boeing Team Support up-comming biofuel powered flight of a US Navy F/A-18
Navy's biofuel-powered flight, scheduled to take place on Earth Day,
April 22. An unmodified, Boeing-built F/A-18F Super Hornet will take
off from Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md., powered by a
sustainable biofuel blend of 50 percent camelina and 50 percent JP-5
aviation fuel.
Operating Navy platforms with renewable energy sources such as
sustainable biofuels is part of the service's strategy to reduce
reliance on fossil fuels by half over the next decade, as well as the
Secretary of the Navy's broader emphasis on energy-efficiency efforts
for the Navy and Marine Corps.
Boeing has been assisting the Navy through laboratory testing of fuel
properties and engineering evaluations of fuel system compatibility,
according to Tim Vinopal, Boeing's environmental chief engineer
supporting the Boeing Defense, Space & Security effort.
"We have worked closely with the aviation and fuels industries for
several years to provide our customers with options to reduce
environmental impact, including the use of sustainable biofuels,"
Vinopal said. "We are honored to be able to support the U.S. Navy in
this groundbreaking renewable-energy effort."
Boeing biofuel testing has included demonstration flights of five
commercial aircraft, testing of four engine types, and laboratory
testing with various fuel processors, feedstocks, and engine
manufacturers to ensure these fuels meet or exceed the high
performance and quality standards specified for current aviation
fuels, without modification to the engine or airframe. Camelina is one
of several promising biofuel crops, as it requires little water or
fertilizer and does not compete with food crops.
The company also is helping to create a commercial market for
renewable fuels and to guide their approval for use in commercial
aviation.
"Boeing is applying the significant knowledge we've gained during this
sustainable biofuel development effort in support of U.S. Department
of Defense specification revisions for military fuels," said Vinopal.
"Boeing recognizes the serious challenges facing the global ecosystem
and is committed to improving the environmental performance of its
operations, products and services."

Airbus Military completes certification flight tests for A330 MRTT hose-and-drogue system
Airbus Military has completed all the flight tests required for the daylight certification of the new generation hose-and drogue refuelling system on the A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT).
20 April 2010
This paves the way towards the formal military certification of the system from Spain's INTA certification authority this summer.
The A330 MRTTT is fitted with the Cobham 905 system, which provides refuelling from under-wing pods. It is the most advanced hose and drogue refuelling system currently available. Testing covered all of the flight envelope required to certify the aircraft handling qualities with the hose-and-drogue deployed, and included a wide range of manoeuvres both in free-flight and in coupled mode with Spanish Air Force F-18 fighters.
"Following civil certification of the A330 MRTT on 17th March 2010, the completion of this flight-test phase is a further major step towards final military certification of the aircraft", says Airbus Military Head of Derivatives, Antonio Caramazana.
Meanwhile, flight testing of the Airbus Military Aerial Refuelling Boom System (ARBS) is also progressing well and will be completed shortly. Delivery of the first A330 MRTT will be to the Royal Australian Air Force later this year.

PIPER DELIVERS FIRST PIPERSPORT AT SUN ‘N FUN
"The PiperSport is an amazing entry-level aircraft that will bring new customers to Piper," Gould said. "It fits perfectly into our overall mission of delivering the very best airplanes. It will lead the way for customers to step up into more sophisticated and higher performance aircraft within our line over time."
The three co-owners -- all from Miami, Fla. -- are Charlie Carlon (ATP/CFI/CFII), 62, a 20,000+ hour, former Delta Airlines Pilot who works for Airbus North America teaching pilots how to fly the Airbus via simulation; Brian Garhammer (ATP/CFI/CFII), 52, a 16,000+ hour, former ATA pilot, who also works for Airbus North America teaching pilots how to fly the Airbus via simulation; and Dr. Mike Morduant, 62, a veterinarian and a pilot for 42 years.
"The PiperSport is sexy!" said Garhammer, who joined with his two friends to accept the keys to Piper's new LSA at a ceremony at Piper's Sun 'n Fun exhibit. "You can go out and buy a BMW or a PiperSport for about the same money. But who wants a sports car when you can fly the PiperSport?"
Morduant echoed Garhammer: "I liked it from the get-go – its all-metal, conventional construction, its useful load, its range and the fact that when my son and I sat in it, we weren't crushing elbows. When I flew it, I really loved it. I was so happy to see that Piper agreed with me (on what was needed in the LSA segment)."
The PiperSport, manufactured by Czech Sport Aircraft (CSA) and distributed through master distributor PiperSport Distribution, Inc., features a rate of climb of 1,200 feet per minute and is capable of reaching a maximum cruise speed of 138 miles per hour and an altitude of 10,000 feet. The aircraft has a gross weight of 1,320 pounds and 600 pounds of useful load. With the ability to run on automotive fuel, the PiperSport's 30-gallon fuel capacity gives the aircraft a range of 600 nautical miles and the ability to refuel virtually anywhere in the world that offers either 100LL or premium, unleaded automotive fuel.
There are three variants of the aircraft: The PiperSport, which sells for $119,900; the PiperSport LT (primarily a training model), which sells for $129,900; and the PiperSport LTD (professional model), which sells for $139,900. Each model features the latest in luxury – from leather seats to cutting-edge design – and is equipped with a 100-hp Rotax 912 engine and a BRS complete aircraft parachute recovery system. Each model also features the same gross weight, speed, fuel capacity, and range.
Charlie Carlon, the third partner with Garhammer and Morduant, flew the PiperSport after its debut at the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo at Sebring, FL earlier this year. "Both Brian and I are retired airline pilots and this aircraft gives us the chance to enjoy aviation in a different light than we've had over the last 25 years," Carlon says. "I've had a passion for aviation since I was a boy, and this airplane speaks to that passion. It's fun to fly!"

EADS North America intends to submit proposal for U.S. Air Force tanker
EADS North America is progressing in discussions with potential U.S. partners to build a winning team in order to provide the most capable, best value solution to the Air Force.
The KC-45 is the only aircraft flying today that meets the U.S. Air Force’s tanker requirements as outlined in its KC-X Request for Proposal (RFP). The KC-45 builds on the EADS-based tanker that was previously selected in 2008 by the Department of Defense and that has won the last five consecutive tanker competitions worldwide.
“We will offer a modern, more capable tanker in response to the Defense Department’s decision to encourage competition for this major taxpayer investment,” said EADS North America Chairman Ralph D. Crosby, Jr. “Our KC-45 is the only real, flying, low-risk solution that today meets the demanding Air Force air refueling requirements and is actually in production now. That fact is critical because our warfighters deserve a true best value solution.”
EADS North America will build and modify the KC-45, along with A330 commercial freighters, at an EADS North America/Airbus production facility to be constructed in Mobile, Alabama. The KC-45 programme and aircraft production/modification center will create and support tens of thousands of high-value American jobs while making a long-term investment in the nation’s economy at a time when other aerospace companies are outsourcing production overseas.
“This tanker competition is all about the warfighter and the aircraft that most successfully meets their requirements. The KC-45 offers what the Air Force needs today: a modern military tanker that is in production now with deliveries beginning this year,” said Sean O’Keefe, EADS North America Chief Executive Officer. “Not only does the KC-45 offer the best value and a huge capability advantage over the competition, it also will support tens of thousands of jobs across America by expanding our nation’s industrial aerospace capacity.”
The KC-45 is the U.S. military version of the proven A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT). To date 28 aircraft have been ordered by four U.S. allies. The MRTT has transferred more than 265,000 lbs. of fuel to a range of military aircraft – from F-16 and F/A-18 fighters to the E-3 AWACS – using the same refueling systems offered on the KC-45.
“Our aircraft has demonstrated its unparalleled capability by refueling a variety of military aircraft utilizing both boom and hose and drogue systems, as well as by operating in the receiving position. That’s a statement our competition can’t make,” said Crosby.
The Royal Australian Air Force will receive the first A330 MRTTs later this year. Additional aircraft are in production or undergoing mission-equipment outfitting for the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
“We’re progressing forward in discussions to expand the ranks of our nearly 200 current U.S. suppliers, some of which are joining us for today’s announcement,” continued O’Keefe.
At the heart of the KC-45 is the most capable aerial refueling system operating today. The aircraft’s fly-by-wire Aerial Refueling Boom System (ARBS) has a demonstrated fuel offload rate of 1,200 U.S. gallons per minute – the only system which meets the U.S. Air Force’s requirements without further modification. The system’s proven all-electric fly-by-wire technology ensures enhanced controllability and safety that greatly aids the boom operator and receiver aircraft's pilot.
The KC-45 also carries an all-digital hose and drogue system for probe-equipped aircraft. The under-wing refueling pods are the most modern in service today, with the capability to deliver up to 420 gallons of fuel per minute through 90-ft.-long hoses at refueling speeds from 180 to 325 knots. The KC-45 will also feature a modern fuselage refueling unit, common with that of allied MRTT users such as the United Kingdom.

Sikorsky and Lockheed Martin Announce teaming agreement to compete for the VXX Presidential helicopter program
The agreement formally positions global helicopter manufacturer Sikorsky as the prime contractor offering its H-92TM medium-lift helicopter for the presidential transport mission with Lockheed Martin, a leading rotary wing systems integrator, as the major subsystems supplier.
Additionally, the two companies jointly submitted a response today to the U.S. Navy's VXX request for information. The document details how a Sikorsky/Lockheed Martin team would design and manufacture the H-92 helicopter with integrated systems for the "Marine One" mission.
"We're thrilled to team with Lockheed Martin to provide taxpayers and the U.S. government with a common sense solution for the next presidential aircraft both in terms of economy and technology," said Scott Starrett, president of Sikorsky Military Systems. "For nearly four decades, Sikorsky and Lockheed Martin have teamed successfully to produce Naval Hawk™ helicopters, so we have a proven and formidable track record as a team."
"Our VXX teaming agreement builds on an existing and highly successful 38-year relationship between Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky," said Dan Spoor, Aviation Systems vice president at Lockheed Martin Mission Systems & Sensors in Owego, N.Y. "Formally combining Sikorsky's success building and supporting the Marine One fleet with our understanding of the systems integration requirements will allow our team to offer a low-risk transport solution to the Office of the President."
Both companies have unique experience supporting presidential helicopters. Sikorsky designed-and-built VH-3D and VH-60N aircraft — designated "Marine One" when the president is on board — have provided safe, reliable transport for the Office of the President since the 1960s. In 2005, Lockheed Martin won the contract to build the replacement fleet. The contract was terminated in 2009 at the convenience of the government after the program delivered nine test and pilot production aircraft.
In addition to the VXX teaming agreement, Sikorsky and Lockheed Martin also have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore business opportunities involving other Sikorsky programs.
The companies have extensive experience working together during four decades developing, delivering and supporting 400 operational SH-60B and MH-60R/S maritime helicopters to the U.S. Navy.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation reported 2009 sales of $45.2 billion.

FAA May Tighten Future VLJ Requirements
The FAR Part 21.35 function and reliability flight testing would include turbine-powered airplanes with maximum takeoff weights of 6,000 lb. or less under a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) released by FAA on April 16.
Currently, FAR Part 23 function and reliability testing only applies to new aircraft with higher gross takeoff weights. The NPRM might be called the Eclipse 500 rule because one of FAA's prime motivations, according to the document, was the organization's recent type certification process associated with the Eclipse 500.

Black Hawk ... Pilot Optional
Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. is collaborating with the U.S. Army to develop an optionally piloted demonstrator Black Hawk helicopter, the company announced today from the AAAA Annual Convention. Sikorsky Aircraft is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
Sikorsky Innovations, Sikorsky Aircraft’s technology organization, is leading the development program. It plans to fly the optionally piloted demonstrator aircraft this year, and is targeting introducing the optionally piloted aircraft in 2015.
“This technology will provide commanders with manning options based on the mission and tactical situation, and will significantly reduce crew limitations while increasing Black Hawk helicopter flight operations,” said Chris Van Buiten Director of Sikorsky Innovations.
The U.S. Army’s total Black Hawk helicopter fleet exceeds 1,740 aircraft and has amassed six million flight hours. More than 3,000 Black Hawk helicopters are in use today, operating in 27 different countries. Designed to stringent U.S. Military standards, the Black Hawk helicopter has become the leader in multi-mission-type aircraft. Among the mission configurations it serves are troop transport, medical evacuation, attack, assault support and special operations.
